I wanted something special for my first ever post so I have decided to share the dress that I have dreamed of making for quite some time now. I first saw the outfit a couple of years ago on a BBC4 programme about the golden age of beauty & glamour. It was a fascinating series (if you are interested in that type of thing) and during the period covering the second world war (a period of history that I have been interested in since I was at school) they had a segment on Make Do & Mend. I think lots of people are interested in this facet of the war but I am intrigued simply because I am always inspired and in awe of people's ingenuity and creativity when it comes to making the most of the resources they have at hand. Sometimes creative juices flow most freely when we find ourselves with limited resources. I think we can learn a lot from the ingenuity of yesteryear and the whole point of history is to learn from the past so as to create a better today.
Anyhow, I saw the following segment on the programme and immediate fell in love with Mrs Clarke's dress. I am a very amateur seamstress who is capable of only the very simplest of items so I haven't quite worked out how I can apply my very limited abilities to create this outfit but one day I hope to produce something along these lines. Who knows, having a blog may help me make my dream dress a reality!
Thanks to the marvel that is the internet and all the knowledge that is just a click away, I was able to find the film footage. Here is the link:

Mrs Clarke created her stunning frock from her husband's old suit and half a yard of new material - I think it is stunning.
